Before you turn away in despair, emails really are an effective way of marketing for new clients. I've relied almost exclusively on this marketing technique since I started writing full-time back in 2008, and I've found loads of work this way.

Sure, cold calling may also be very effective - probably even more effective - but I prefer to send emails. Perhaps I'm just too scared to make the calls. But I do like the fact that I can send out emails quickly and easily each and every day, and they have worked for me, so why fix something that's not broken?

A Recently Gained Client

Here's a little story about how I managed to get a new client which was a bit out of the ordinary. A few weeks ago I received an email from a prospective client, and after looking at my database I couldn't find him anywhere, meaning I had never contacted him. I don't even have a website any more because I have now stopped marketing for new work, so it was quite strange to get a completely new enquiry.

It turned out that the person had found me through getting my contact details from someone he knew who worked at an SEO company. I had actually emailed this person many months ago and they had kept my details on file. But even though they have never got back to me personally, it still led to some work (and quite a nice little earner at that!).

Emailing Works

The secret to bringing in regular work through emailing prospective clients is to send them out regularly. That means choosing a number to send out each week (I used to send out at least 50 a week, or 10 a day) and sticking to it.

Some weeks you will find that no one gets back to you. Others you will be flooded with responses.

Will this lead to a constant stream of work? Well, you will almost certainly still go through dry spells. But because you are sending out emails on a regular basis, you know that the work will come in. It may be more one month than another month, but it all evens out at the end of the year.

That means, rather than panicking, you can use your quieter times to focus on other things like working on your website, writing some more blog posts, or even looking for new clients to email.
